You Don't Know Rosie (Who Is Rosie the Riveter?)

You Don't Know Rosie (Who Is Rosie the Riveter?) Rosie the Riveter, and the perpetuated myth about who she was and what she stands for, is an example of "collective misconception," the phenomena known as the Mandela Effect.  The Mandela Effect is a societal phenomenon where a group of  people repeat a false thing so many times, others pick it up and keep repeating it, and then eventually the false thing "becomes true." It is kind of terrifying when you think about it.

Throwback Thursday: 2016 (Hilary was Right)

Throwback Thursday: 2016 (Hilary was Right) TRUMP:....Look, Putin... WALLACE: Wait, but... TRUMP: ... from everything I see, has no respect for this person. CLINTON: Well, that's because he'd rather have a puppet as president of the United States. TRUMP: No puppet. No puppet. CLINTON: And it's pretty clear... TRUMP: You're the puppet! CLINTON: It's pretty clear you won't admit... TRUMP: No, you're the puppet. CLINTON: ... that the Russians have engaged in cybe…

The Phone Is Not The Problem

The Phone Is Not The Problem This week is when I try to figure out what makes sense about  people,  who have bought a product,  criticizing the company that makes the product,  because people are getting too much use out of the product they bought.  What chapter of The Modern Capitalism Handbook deals with this? "What Is She Talking About?" If your kid is addicted to her iPhone, doesn't that seem like a problem that would be solved not by the iPhone's maker, but…

Rose Marie: 1923–2017

Rose Marie: 1923–2017 You guys, Rose Marie died.  I admit that I shed a tear or two tonight. I was way too young to "get" the Dick Van Dyke show when it was in re-runs on TV. But years later I found a connection with it, when I went off to college in New Rochelle.  I loved Sally, and I guess she was my first glimpse into "a TV writer," and she was a WOMAN. YES! Man, she was cool. So yeah, I got a little emotional when I heard of this fine funny lady…

Throwback Thursday: July 21, 2015 (Word Salad)

Throwback Thursday: July 21, 2015 (Word Salad) "Look, having nuclear—my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT—good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart—you know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I'm one of the smartest people anywhere in the world—it’s true!—but when you're a conservative Republican…

The New Social Contract. Where do I sign?

The New Social Contract. Where do I sign? "What I wish would occur, in my own fantasy land of imaginings, would be for the Occupy/Bernie Sanders/Jill Stein sects, to unite with the Black Lives Matter members and supporters, along with Native American and environmental land protectionists, and all join forces with the (let’s call them) more centrist, “traditionally” progressive Democratic party forces, realizing that each of their essential, individual goals – some as urgent as repe…

Throwback Thursday: 2003 I met my husband on stage, but I fell in love with him online. He had me at  " James Dean ... smelling of whiskey and coke  and some breakfast sausage ." AOL AIM INSTANT MESSENGER

"...see because cloaking was a Romulan technology..."

"...see because cloaking was a Romulan technology..." Telling Joe about the online discussion I'm in, started by a dude who finds parallel between Star Trek TNG and Harry Potter. Mostly based on the Starfleet uniform colors and Hogwarts houses, the fun ideas being raised are, for example, that the Hogwarts green (Slytherin) aligns with the Romulans. I explained, "By that logic, a Slytherin must have originally charmed the Invisibility cloak---" That's as far as I got before Joe&#…

Throwback Thursday: 1974

Throwback Thursday: 1974 I had this blue dress when I was four. I hated that dress so hard, I needed all five senses to hate it with, and maybe another half a sense I made up during a tantrum. The color reminded me of something gag-reflexingly bad, but I don't remember what that was, exactly. I wonder if maybe I associated the sky blue hue with those "wedding almonds" that my grandma Maggie always had, for some reason, in a bowl in her house. Revolting, y…

DONALD TRUMP: AMERICAN TRAGEDY

DONALD TRUMP: AMERICAN TRAGEDY For decades, women had been risking their careers and reputations coming forward to tell their stories about being cornered and assaulted by Donald Trump, the tacky New York luxury real estate guy turned TV show host. When the Access Hollywood tape was made public in October 2016, Donald Trump was caught bragging about his self-appointed right to sexually assault any woman that he happened to find attractive. I was like, "People are serious…

Asking

Asking Ya know, if I had like, $7000, my whole entire life would be different. I wonder what it was like centuries ago when there were patrons supporting artists. Should I finish  The Art of Asking  by Amanda Palmer? I keep thinking magical thoughts. Like, "Maybe seven thousand people will give me a dollar." That's how it works, right, Amanda? I only read the first part. Okay, I only read the cover. At the bookstore and I didn't buy the…
