Currently Listening: What's Going On (Marvin Gaye) 1971

Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his father during a family argument. It was April 1, 1984, one day before his 45th birthday.

I was 14. My brother was 10 and played a lot of sports. I remember that because on that day, he had an accident on the field and my parents took him to the hospital. They sat in the waiting room. There were two elderly black gentlemen sitting across from them. My mom heard one of them say to the other, "You know, we lost Marvin."

That's how my mom heard about Marvin Gaye's death. It's what she told me when they got home. I still remember the moment. Marvin Gaye was dead?! I couldn't even process it. I couldn't even talk with my friends about it because they only knew Marvin Gaye from the single "Sexual Healing" released two years before. But my parents always played Marvin Gaye's records for my whole life, mainly "What's Going On" and "Let's Get It On." I was hearing "You Sure Love To Ball" literally over a decade before I knew what it was about! lol. Marvin was on constantly in our house. I knew those records backward and forward.

Marvin loomed large. What can you say about a guy like him, but PURE GENIUS.

(My brother was okay but in a cast.)

Happy Birthday, Marvin.
