I shouldn't have done that, but apparently this is an offense so egregious as to permanently ban me from the subreddit! I was stunned. I replied to the MOD, and they get to hide behind anonymity mind you, that I didn't realize I was in violation of the rules? I tried to explain. They absolutely tore my head off. They claimed I had had "several" posts removed, and had "MULTITUDES" of messages and have ignored everything...ummmm...dude, what?
It's true that I had a couple of posts removed, that I was baffled as to why they would be removed. One was about whether Gen X was the last generation to go to work on Halloween in costume. In its entirety, this was the removed post:
Halloween costumes at work?
Tag: NostalgiaIn the 90s I worked for a tech company, and only the weirdos dressed up for Halloween. Me among them. Another woman on the other coast would dress up too. We would grab conference rooms, fire up the video conference software, just to show each other our costumes. So fun. Does anyone dress up for Halloween at work anymore?
I never got any explanation for WHY it was removed, and I didn't complain. My post had 23 replies--a good conversation going--before the MOD took it down. No explanation. Okay, whatever.
Another post that was taken down I did have explained to me, not by the MOD who took it down, but by the other users--no Facebook links! I had posted a very Gen X image, and I thought the image itself would post, but instead a LINK to it on Facebook posted. You see, Reddit hates Facebook like the Red Sox fans hate the Yankees. It isn't a rule of the subreddit or anything. The users good-naturedly ribbed me about that Facebook gaffe, and I laughingly apologized profusely to everyone. The MOD took the post down, again without any explanation. They could have just told me not to use a Facebook link next time, to just post the image. That's what I would have done if I were a MOD. Those are the only two times I've had posts removed from the Community Gen X, one I happen to care about, obviously. Two posts removed, one I have no idea why, and one I didn't realize was a no-no, but which is not exactly against the rules. Two. In five years. The MOD saying that I've had "several" posts removed is making the word "several" do a lot of heavy lifting, wouldn't you say?
Now this latest post, the link back to this blog? I read the rules twice and I didn't see the part about not promoting your blog. I just didn't see it. I had just linked that entry, Gen X: The Era Of Latchkey Kids, to the BloggersCommunity subreddit, which does allow linking to blogs. In fact, it's what it's for--maybe I got confused, I don't know. When you post, it invites you to cross-post in another subreddit. Maybe I thought that the Gen X crowd would particularly enjoy and find community with that blog entry. I can't remember. I tried explaining about the stroke and how there's a certain degree of memory loss and brain fog. They didn't give a wet slap.
And what "MULTITUDES of messages" are they referring to? I have never once heard from a MOD from any subreddit. My inbox reflects that fact. What are they talking about? I'll post the whole exchange in a minute, but first, this is what it says on Reddit's main site about VALUES:
We believe Reddit is the most human place on the internet. It’s powered by the creativity, passion, and generosity of the people who spend time here and make it their own. We respect redditors and work hard to give them a place where self-expression can thrive and communities can achieve amazing things together.
We also remember that there are real people on the other side of the screen who lead full and complex lives. And often, when someone is struggling or in need of support, they come to Reddit to find help and understanding they can’t find elsewhere. We take this role seriously and aim to make Reddit a place where people can continue to find communities that accept and appreciate them for who they are. (Emphasis mine.)
Having said all that, this is the exchange with the Gen X MOD:
Feb 17
"Permanently muted" means what it says. I wasn't able to talk to them anymore, nor could I talk to someone else. Why? This is flabbergasting, and moreover, I feel baited by that question " What did you find about this email exchange that you felt you needed to report it to Reddit?" I answered honestly--I didn't report it to Reddit. I probably should have. I didn't think of it. Because I'm not a mean, vindictive, angry person? Now I want to be a MOD. Someone should hold this person accountable for their unhinged behavior.
I feel that if this is the kind of person they have as a MODERATOR of a Reddit Community that I've been a contributor to for five years, in good standing, then they have a bigger problem than a post-stroke Gen X blogger mistakenly posting a Gen X post in their Gen X Community. They have a bully, that's what they have. Someone who is not displaying behavior synonymous with their stated mission. I'd consider that a real problem.
